Chapter Eight

Tony

Tony hadn’t touched a drop of alcohol that night. It was unusual for him, but honestly, he’d been so wrapped up in Ray, in the potential which bubbled between them, to want to have so much as a sip.

All he could hope was that Ray would hear his silent plea. Tony couldn’t stay at the party for one more minute. There was a lot of making out, at the very least, which happened at a party like this, and Tony couldn’t handle it. Not when the only person he wanted to kiss was Ray.

For a moment, Tony turned back to look at his best friend. Hopefully, he was following. But what Tony saw froze his heart in his chest, made it, for a brief, and yet endless, moment, unable to even beat.

The incredibly pretty, and very drunk, young woman was on Ray’s lap, her knees on either side of his hips, pressed intimately close. She whispered something in his ear, and Tony didn’t need to be able to read lips to figure out what it was.

She was propositioning Ray. Ray, who Tony was suddenly sickeningly aware didn’t have any reason to turn her down. Ray wasn’t Tony’s. They had shared one night, and some teasing talk. That was all.

Ray could go off and sleep with this girl, and there was nothing Tony could do about it. Not really. Not ethically, anyway. Which didn’t stop him from wanting to. It would be so easy to let himself storm back down the stairs, grab that woman, and pull her off of Tony’s …

Tony’s what?

His boyfriend? No, not that. They hadn’t made anything official. And being his best friend didn’t give him the right to break it up.

As Tony watched, Ray reached for the girl, putting his hands right on her waist. His heart broke in his chest. No, it didn’t break. It shattered. Into a billion little pieces.

Maybe it was better this way, Tony thought wildly to himself, as he turned away before he could see the kiss which seemed inevitable. Better for him to get his heart broken now, than when he’d fallen even more for the guy.

Better that he knew just how impossible it all was.

Quietly, he walked upstairs, and it was at least less packed up here. The party was mainly downstairs, and when he slipped into the sanctuary of his room, which was, mercifully, empty, he finally felt safe to let himself go.

His legs gave out, and he collapsed onto the bed. He was being an idiot. It was really his own fault for letting himself fall for another man. He should have known better. He had known better, but it had happened anyway.

He couldn’t even blame Ray for it, could he? He was angry, but neither Ray nor the sorority girl had done anything wrong. It was just that Tony was an idiot, and he had let himself feel things that he absolutely never should have.

Which meant his anger had nowhere to go. He growled softly into his pillow, then buried his face in its fluffy, comforting softness.
